Root Canal
There’s no need to worry because Root Canal is the treatment for YOU!
Root Canal is also known as endodontic treatment and is used to save a damaged tooth. Millions of damaged teeth get treated and saved each year with this treatment, relieving pain and making teeth healthy again!
Reasons for damage may include:
- Decay
- Disease
- Injury
Teeth consist of a white enamel and a hard layer called dentin, beneath that is a soft tissue called pulp containing blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue. Damage can often cause infection in the pulp and must be treated.
Infection or inflammation of the pulp can be caused by the following:
- Repeated dental work to the tooth
- Breakdown of a filling or crown
- A deep cavity
- Trauma
- Gum disease
- Crack or chip in the tooth
- Extreme wear
Symptoms of infection may include:
- Pain
- Sensitivity to heat or cold
- Tooth discolouration
- Swelling or soreness in the gums surrounding the tooth
Procedure
The Root Canal procedure involves the extraction of root nerves from the damaged tooth, the canal cavity is then cleaned and shaped, fillers are then inserted to prevent bacteria from re-entering nerve system.
It is important to note that pulp damage can occur even if there are no visible signs of chips or cracks present. If the pulp cannot repair itself, it will initially become inflamed and if treatment is not done it will become infected and die. You should seek treatment if any symptoms of an infected pulp are experienced.
